The Doncaster Air Museum is situated at Doncaster’s Lakeside Village.
RAF Doncaster was a pre war civil field, which was commandeered by the RAF at the outbreak of WW2.
On 1 November 1938 No 503 Squadron re-located to Doncaster and was re-numbered No 616 (South Yorkshire) Squadron, Auxiliary Air Force.
It was originally equipped with Hind light bombers but from 15 November it was re-designated a fighter unit. It re-equipped with Gauntlets in 1939 and Spitfires in November 1939.
It began the Battle of Britain in its home county of Yorkshire but in mid August it joined the main battle when it moved to Kenley. Fighter sweeps over the continent began in April 1941 receiving Spitfire IIs in February 1941 and VBs in July 1941. In April 1942 it received the high altitude version of the Spitfire, the Mk VI and from September 1943, the Mk VII.
However, before the last Spitfire had left a new aircraft was arriving in the form of the RAF’s first jet fighter, the Gloster Meteor.
It’s most well known inhabitant formed in 1940, was the 271 squadron which took part in D-Day flying Dakotas. The airfield also became associated with Dakotas, which were also repaired at the airfield during the war years.
With Dakotas being flown for 46 Group as well as 271′s transports, Doncaster was becoming a very busy airfield.
Today not much remains on the site, the North Western corner, however, is home to the Aeroventure museum, housing a number of exhibits both outside and in an original Bellman hangar.
Lots of Paranormal Phenomena has been independently witnessed and recorded at this location!
Including Unexplained Light Anomalies and Dark Shadows seen in and around the building and aircraft.
People have often reported Poltergeist Activity and being tapped on the shoulder or having their hair and clothes pulled.
The sounds of heavy footsteps and voices have been heard from the hangers but upon investigation, no one is there!
There have also been reports of the manifestation of a pair of legs.
Could these be the spirits of airmen still attached to the remains of the aircraft they once flew?
